Tareeq Privacy Policy
Effective date: [date of publication]
Tareeq ("we") is a navigation app for Iraq, published by peshangdev. Tareeq is built to work without knowing who you are. There are no accounts, and we do not ask for your name, phone number or email.
What stays on your phone
- Your recent destinations (up to 8) and your settings. They are never sent to us. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
- Your exact location while you browse the map. It is used on your phone to show where you are.
What is sent to our servers, and why
Tareeq needs some information to work. None of it is linked to an account, a device ID or an advertising ID, because the app has none of these.
| When | What is sent | Why | How long we keep it |
|---|---|---|---|
| You ask for a route | Your starting point and destination | To calculate the route | Not stored after the route is sent back |
| You search for a place | What you typed and your approximate position | To find places near you first | Not stored |
| You view the map | The map area on screen | To send the map images and road reports for that area | Not stored |
| You report a road problem | The type of problem, its location, and your location at that moment | To show the report to other drivers; your location is only checked to confirm you are near the problem | The report is kept until it expires (between 30 minutes and 7 days, depending on its type) or other drivers remove it. Your own location is not stored |
| You confirm or reject a report | Which report and your answer | To keep reports accurate | Only the report's score is kept |
| You navigate with speed sharing on | Your position, speed and direction about once a second, sent in batches | To work out live traffic for everyone | Raw data is deleted within 30 days; only average road speeds are kept |
Speed sharing
Speed sharing is what makes live traffic possible. It only happens during a navigation trip, and you can turn it off at any time. Before anything leaves your phone:
- the first and last 500 metres of every trip are removed on your phone, so your home and your destination are never sent;
- each batch carries a random code that changes every 15 minutes, so a whole trip cannot be put together from it, and nothing links it to you or your phone;
- inaccurate GPS readings are dropped.
IP addresses
Every connection on the internet carries your network's IP address. Our servers are set up not to record IP addresses in their logs or databases. To protect the service from overload, our servers count how many requests come from each IP address; that count is kept in memory only, for about a minute, and is never written down.
Other companies
- Google Play services provides your phone's location to Tareeq. Google handles this under its own privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy).
- Spoken directions use the text-to-speech engine installed on your phone.
- Our servers are hosted by [hosting provider, to be decided]. They process data only on our instructions.
We do not sell data, show ads, use advertising IDs or use analytics or tracking tools.
Permissions
- Location (precise and approximate): to show where you are, navigate and, if you choose, share speeds. Location is used while the app is open or while you are navigating.
- Notifications: to show navigation in the notification bar so it keeps working with the screen off.
- Foreground service (location): to keep navigating when the screen is off or another app is open, only during a trip.
You can change these in your phone's settings. Tareeq works without location, but cannot navigate.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Reports and traffic data contain no personal identifiers.
Children
Tareeq is a driving app and is not intended for children under 13.
Your choices
- Turn off speed sharing on the welcome screen, or later in settings.
- Turn off location access in your phone's settings.
- Uninstall the app to delete everything stored on your phone.
Because we hold nothing that identifies you, we cannot find or return "your" data: reports and traffic data cannot be traced back to anyone.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
